Livingston Dems Endorse Vets Millage Renewal on Aug. 4 Ballot

Livingston Dems are encouraging voters to say Yes! To a county-wide millage to support Livingston County veterans services on the Aug. 4 primary ballot.
The party’s executive committee voted unanimously on Thursday, July 23, to endorse passage of the millage.
“This millage will make sure that the 12,000 veterans and their dependents in Livingston County receive the services they need – transportation to medical service, help with rent, utilities, food, and much more. They gave their all for us. Now it’s time for us to be there for them,” said Judy Daubenmier, party chair.
The proposal on the ballot renews an existing millage at a slightly lower rate than currently levied.
It will be .1117 of one mill, or just over 11 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for six years, starting in 2028 through 2033.
The measure would raise $1.6 million the first year. For a home with a market value of $170,000, the annual cost would be approximately $10.
Some of the services provided by the Livingston County Veterans Services are:
Assistance with filing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs disability claims, veterans’ pension applications, burial benefits, and survivors’ benefits.
Processing of Livingston County burial and funeral allowances.
Case management and ongoing support for recipients of VA benefits.
Countywide non-medical transportation services, including rides for grocery shopping, employment-related transportation, banking, and participation in senior or recreational programs, as well as transportation to medical appointments within a 50-mile radius.
Provision of Memorial Day flags and grave markers.
Funding from the millage would support:
Staff experts who help veterans fill out their complicated paperwork in order to receive VA benefits.
Addressing the growing demand for financial relief.
Increasing burial benefits.
More outreach to veterans, including letting them know about available benefits.
Expanding countywide non-medical transportation services.
Maintaining the agency’s new office and increasing the use of the space as a community hub for veterans and their families.
