Livingston Dems Back Voting, Reproductive Freedom Amendments

Livingston County Democrats are urging voters to vote Yes on two proposals on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Members of the Michigan Democratic Party endorsed the proposals at the party’s August convention. Livingston Dems followed suit at the party’s monthly meeting in August. Both proposals amend the Michigan Constitution.

Prop 2, called Promote the Vote 2022, will make voting a fundamental right in the Michigan Constitution.

Its key provisions would:

  • Recognize the fundamental right to vote without harassing conduct so voters can vote free from intimidation and interference.

  • Require military or overseas ballots be counted if postmarked by Election Day.

  • Provide voters the right to verify identity with photo ID or signed statement.

  • Allow voters to request an absentee ballot by mail for all future elections.

  • Require secure drop boxes and robust absentee ballot tracking.

  • Require election audits be conducted in public, by state and county election officials, based on established guidelines to promote accuracy and transparency.

  • Require nine days of in-person, early voting.

  • Require canvassing boards to certify election results based only on the official records of votes cast.

“These provisions will make sure all eligible voters will have their voices heard,” said Judy Daubenmier, county party chair. “If you want to make our elections more secure, we urge you to support this proposal.”

Prop 3, the constitutional amendment on reproductive freedom, would restore the freedoms of Roe vs. Wade taken away by the Republican justices on the U.S. Supreme Court.

It will guarantee every Michigan resident the fundamental right to make and carry out decisions without political interference about all matters relating to pregnancy, including birth control, abortion, prenatal care, and childbirth.

In particular, Prop 3 would ensure that all Michiganders have the right to safe and respectful care during birthing and that everyone has the right to use temporary or permanent birth control and to continue or end a pregnancy pre-viability. It would make sure no one can be punished for having a miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion.

“A record number of 730,000 Michigan voters signed petitions to put this measure on the ballot, showing how strongly they feel about the right to make their own decisions about when and if to start a family,” Daubenmier said. “They have said ‘No!’ to having government and politicians in their bedrooms.”

The Michigan Democratic Party and the local party do not have a position on Prop 1, dealing with term limits.
