Russia’s unprovoked invasion of its neighbor, Ukraine, began a year ago this week. Rather than collapse in days, the nation fights on as the world watches the dreadful slaughter of soldiers and cruel assaults on civilians.

How have the people of Ukraine endured? What has been the human cost of the last year? Is the resolve of the Ukrainian people still firm? What might the next few months bring?

Eugene Bondarenko will be at the next meeting of Livingston Dems to answer your questions about the war against his native land. He is a former journalist and translator in Ukraine. He teachers Ukrainian and Russian languages at the University of Michigan.

He will speak at the party’s monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. Sign up here to receive the Zoom link.

“Democracy was on the line in the U.S. in the last election, but democracy in Europe literally is under attack every day that the war in Ukraine continues. This update will help us understand why American support is so crucial in that battle,” said Judy Daubenmier, chair of the Livingston County Democratic Party.

The party also expects a legislative update from Rep. Jennifer Conlin, who represents the 48th State House District – Genoa and Hamburg townships, the village of Pinckney, and the southeast corner of Putnam Township. The party’s regular business meeting will follow.
