The Michigan Democratic Party has a deep bench of qualified candidates running for statewide office in 2026, and Livingston Dems will have a chance to hear from two more of them at the party’s July meeting.

Eli Savit, candidate for the Democratic nomination for attorney general, and Barb Byrum, candidate for the party’s nomination for secretary of state, both will speak at the July 24 meeting.

Savit, the current Washtenaw County prosecuting attorney, is a lifelong Michigan resident.

As attorney general, Savit says he would champion justice, protect constitutional rights, hold powerful interests accountable, and stand up for Michiganders against the Trump agenda.

A former public school teacher and legal clerk for Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Savit has dedicated his career to public service. As senior legal counsel for the City of Detroit, he led significant public interest litigation, including cases against opioid manufacturers and efforts to secure funding for Detroit schools.

Savit was elected as Washtenaw County Prosecutor in 2020 and re-elected in 2024 where he implemented progressive reforms such as establishing units focused on economic justice and wrongful convictions. He created Michigan’s only prosecutor-led unit for worker and consumer protection and supports alternatives to incarceration for low-level offenses.

Savit has also focused on sexual assault cases, violence and crime prevention, and gun safety reforms. He is committed to defending reproductive freedom, workers’ rights, and the environment. As Attorney General, Eli promises to partner with local communities and use the law to hold powerful interests accountable and protect the rights of all Michiganders. More information is available on his website.

Byrum is currently serving her fourth term as Ingham County Clerk, acting as the County's Chief Elections Official. As the Clerk of one of the most populous counties in the State of Michigan, Byrum has successfully conducted 40 elections, 10 union elections, and many statewide and local recounts.

She is a member of Election Center's Ethics Project Focus Group and Security Committee. Byrum has lent her expertise to Michigan's Election Security Commission, and the Secretary of State's Election Policy Work Group, working with election officials across the state to navigate changes to election law and secure Michigan's Elections.

Byrum has been a fervent advocate for the voting rights of qualified, registered voters, focusing on historically disenfranchised voters. She is a member of the Overseas Voting Initiative, a collaboration between the Council of State Governments and the US Department of Defense to improve the process of voting by members of the military and civilians living abroad.

Byrum previously served three terms in the Michigan House where she was the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Redistricting and Elections.

Byrum graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness Management and holds a law degree from MSU College of Law. Since 2016, Byrum has been credentialed as a Certified Elections/Registration Administrator by Election Center, the only national program of continuing professional education that specializes in Elections administration and voter registration.

When not geeking out over elections, Byrum can be found running and spending time at the pool, watching her boys play competitive water polo and swim.
