Protecting the Hamburg Township environment and expanding broadband access are among the proposals advocated by a pair of Democrats running for trustee in Hamburg Township.
The candidates, both long-time county residents and former small business owners, are: :
--Marie Joppich, an information technology specialist and small business owner
--Cindy Michniewicz, a retired chef and former small business owner.
“I want to help Hamburg become a leader among Michigan townships in supporting a clean environment and responding to climate change. I also want to make sure that as the township expands, it remains a place people can afford to live,” Joppich said.
Joppich said she would make expanding broadband internet access a priority. The coronavirus crisis shows how people depend on the internet, and small businesses need it to run their operations and file reports with state government, she said.
Michniewicz said the township needs new leadership to face emerging challenges. "Now, more than ever, we need thoughtful and informed leaders at the local level. I chose to run for Hamburg Trustee because I wanted to have a voice in the decision-making process on local issues. I know what working families go through to make ends meet,” she said.
“Hamburg is an incredibly unique community with an abundance of lakes, rivers, streams and parks, and we need to protect those resources. We have taken for granted that we would always have fish we can eat, lakes we can swim in, and water we can drink and with last year’s finding of high PFAS levels in the Huron River and the Chain of Lakes we know that is not always the fact. The township can work in conjunction with the state and county to monitor findings and keep the residents updated. If elected in November I will serve the community by listening to my neighbors’ concerns and making sound fiscal decisions to preserve our quality of life.”
Joppich works at Perceptron in Plymouth leading a team that tests 3D automated measuring software. From 2002-2017, she was the manager of Visual Equestrian, which provides dressage and training for horses.
Joppich, whose address is Pinckney, graduated from Hartland High School and earned both a bachelor’s of science degree and a master’s in information services at Lawrence Technological University. She also is certified in project management.

Michniewicz acquired a Culinary of Arts degree from Schoolcraft College and had a 30-year career in local food service establishments, including owning Anjou Bakery in Brighton.
