MDP Chair to Speak at Livingston Dems’ Convention

The current chair of the Michigan Democratic Party will speak to Livingston Dems at our Jan. 26 convention. Lavora Barnes is running for another term as party chair at the MDP’s statewide convention on Feb. 11 at Huntington Place, Detroit.

“We are delighted to have Lavora speak to us about her accomplishments as state party chair and what her plans will be for the next two years,” said Judy Daubenmier, chair of the Livingston County Democratic Party.

Lavora Barnes is the Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party. Elected in February 2019, Barnes is the first Black person elected to this post.

Her accomplishments as chair include starting a program to put field organizers throughout the state year-round, instead of only before elections. She also created a permanent Voter Protection Director, helping the party fight voter suppression efforts and keep Michigan elections free and fair.

Her 2022 results include the re-election of the Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General, winning all of the statewide partisan offices, maintaining the majority on the Michigan Supreme Court, winning majorities in both the State Senate and the State House, and the flipping of a Congressional seat on the west side of Michigan.

The county party’s convention will be at 7 p.m. via Zoom. In order to vote at the convention, one must have been a member of the party for 30 days, which would be Dec. 27.

Besides hearing from Lavora Barnes, the main business of the convention will be to elect members to serve on committees for the state convention.

The positions to be filled are:

Credentials Committee – 1 alternate, male.

The credentials committee will meet Feb. 4, 1-2 p.m., on Zoom. Members are also asked to attend the Feb. 11 state convention to assist with credentialling.

Resolutions Committee – 1 alternate, male

The Resolutions committee will meet Feb. 1, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Zoom

Rules Committee – 1 member, female

The rules committee will meet Jan. 31, 6 p.m., on Zoom

The full Call to Convention is here. The Call to Convention includes information on how to register for the Zoom link and who is eligible to vote. The party’s regular monthly business meeting will follow on Zoom.
